Why do white people go tanning?

When they're tan, it's so obvious that it's not their natural color unless they're Greek or a white ethnicity that has darker features. Then generally they have semi-dark skin already. A lady at work gets leather brown year-round and it's obvious that it's not her natural skintone. Whites' skin is the thinnest and more prone to skin cancer than any other race's skin, so why do they do this to themselves? What's wrong with them being pink or white? Seriously, pink is my favorite color! From a lot of questions from whites I've seen here it sounds like they're so proud to be white and want white holidays (lol) and such, but why don't they outwardly want to look white? It's not like they'll be seen as a different race then unless they have features that look like that race. I've heard them say they want a glow. Can't you do that w/o darkening your skin? Get some sparkly blush or brightening powder.

Why do white people go tanning?
Here are the reasons:

1. They want to look more exotic or ethnic

2. Tanning evens out the color making it look flawless

3. They don't want to glow in the dark. Having you ever seen a white person skinny dipping? I mean they literally glow in the dark!

I'm tan all year round. I love my skin!
Reply:For protection from the sun. Because it looks good. Because it feels good.
Reply:What race are you that you have such a hard time relating to other races? I hope the white people around you don't get all upset about the beauty rituals you go through.
Reply:Well its the same reason why many asains bleach their skin
Reply:It's not about trying to look like a different race. It's about wanting to achieve a certain look within your race.

Pale white skin can sometimes look pallid and unhealthy (like a person who's been inside for a long time due to illness), so some people want to achieve the healthy, sun-kissed glow that comes from an active lifestyle spent outdoors. So it's not about wanting to be "brown" or "black", but about wanting to be a "toasty pink/white".

Unfortunately, yes, some people lose their perception and chase ever-darker, ever-more-cancer-prone tans. Cosmetics can only add a slight and temporary bit of color to a limited body range; a genuine suntan can add long-term, all-over color.
Reply:It's the same reason some Blacks wear weaves, it's Hollywood's standards of beauty....fake hair, skin, boobs, EVERYTHING.....

i straighten my hair so i can't be one to judge because this isn't my natural hair, it's mine but i have to buy products to straighten it....women (especially) do these things to pretty themselves up, not that we're not beautiful the way we are but that's the way it is....we look to hollywood for a lot of things....the latest trends and all....and tanning and long straight hair and big breasts are a few things that are looked up to in hollywood, but then again so is being a drunken whore and and a boulemic....i'm confused now so bye bye....
Reply:Well, people do not happy with what they have :)
Reply:cuz they feel like it
Reply:because they secretly want to be hispanic lol jk
Reply:They like being tan.
Reply:not just white people like to tan. i guess people who tan just want to have a certain glow to them. personally i think its a bad idea to expose your skin to the sun or even to tanning beds, but to each they're own.
Reply:Some people have psoriasis and tanning is very beneficial for this skin disorder. Both natural sunlight and tanning lights helps psoriasis.
Reply:I'm sorry, you lost me at "why do white people".
Reply:I really can't speak for other "whites" but my pale skin makes me look drab and sickly.
Reply:I've given up trying to understand white people, and many of the things they do. I tan sometimes, but I'm Asian and it looks realistic on me because many Asians have darker skin naturally. White people just look like worn out leather shoes when they tan.
Reply:im white and i dont go tanning, so dont assume all white ppl like to go tanning.
Reply:lol y does every 1 want ot b Hispanic

cos sum 1 wants a tan doesnt mean there tryna b like another race

i no girls of other races hu use make up 2 lighten there skin tone i but i dont think they wana b white

n alot fo white ppl av natural olive skin my family r irish n english n thats it n most of them av olive skin

n most ppl hu use sun beds do use sum form of sun protetion i did wen i used 2

n all races do things to there body like weaves n make up n colured contacts n fake nails

i hav used sun beds b4 cosi av pale skin but i got bored i wanst doin it 2 look lik a diffrent race i jus sone it cos it looked nicer in the summer n alot of white ppl do tan a lil bit in the sun

n sum ppl do use make up 2 giv um self a glow but u cant use it for ya whole body

n to prevent any risks alot of ppl use fake tans now that the obviusos 1ns cos wen sum 1 goes on a sunbedi its a total cover n it ya skin thats changing n not a spray dyeing it n thats the obviouse 1cos the colures r either orange 2 dark or come out streaky y does it bother u that white ppl like to make them self look good wit a tan hair straighteners

so every race has ppl hu alter there looks with sumthin

u shudnt assum all white ppl do certian things jus cos they white n uv seen some white ppl like that
Reply:It can be personal preference, or in excess, the desire to be "in." Most of Hollywood looks "baked" IMO--and leather brown skin like you are talking about looks very unattractive.

For me, I like a little color, key word being "little." I'm naturally light beige in color and I tan well. I have dark brown eyes and light brown hair with olive undertones in my skin. I look better with a light tan, but I usually achieve it and maintain it with sunless tanners. I might hit the beach or the park for an afternoon to deepen my skin tone, but my "basking" days are long gone.

I don't agree with baking in the sun and/or excessive tanning bed use. Whether you tan or burn, too much sun will age you. By the time these sun worshipers are in their late 20's and early 30's, the damage will be irreversible. I've noticed that those with darker skin that tan easily but excessively may not have the wrinkling that those w/light skin will have, but their skin will SAG. I knew a lady with deep olive skin that sunned a lot and the last time I saw her, I was shocked at how bad she looked.

Sunscreen is really important, especially now that the sun is so strong. My mom instilled the sunscreen habit in me since childhood and my skin looks pretty good--all things considered. :-) If I'm going to be in the sun for more than 1/2 hour or so, I use sunscreen--always.
