Relenting after a few years of telling my little sister I wasn't going, I finally went to the tanning bed.

My first time going 6 minutes was recommended. I think I did that for about a week. The second week I slowly upped it to ten minutes, but I burned my stomach and chest. By the second week I wasn't really pale, but the skin that's always at least covered by a bathing suit is the most sensitive. I was nicely tan by the third week, but I've never gone back.

Tanning has its benefits, it looks a little more healthy than being super pale, and a little sunlight during the winter to help your body get some Vitamin D always gives your mood an extra boost without the expensive trip to Starbucks. However, it has a lot of drawbacks, too. Honestly I never should have gone, as melanoma runs in my family, and the tan faded pretty fast as soon as I stopped going on a regular basis. It wasn't all that expensive, but it was definitely money I could have used elsewhere. On another note, my aunt used to tan all of the time when she was younger, and now, though she is the youngest she looks like she's the oldest.

If this is something you're set on, go for it; if your parents agree (if that's even applicable). Just remember what can happen!
Reply:Don't do it. God, will people ever learn?

Just get an air-brush tan. You can control the color and where you want it plus it's SAFE.
Reply:um. you should go tanning when pigs fly or when skin cancer is good for your health. spray tan.
Reply:Parts of your body may be less tan than other parts, even if you are tan, so most tanning salons will start you at 5 or 6 minutes, unless you've been outside tanning through the summer. Typically if you go into the salon and talk to them about it, they're trained on how long to put you in for. Sometimes it helps to put a light sunscreen on parts of you that may not be as tan (since typically people tan naked) to help you not burn. Even if you think you don't burn easy, the tanning bed is easy to get a burn in because of the concentrated nature of the ultraviolet light you're exposed to. It's better to go in for only a few minutes than to try pushing your limits because if you get burn it'll set back your tanning progress. Once you get a nice base tan (going every day for a few weeks), you'll probably need to go 4 times a week or so to maintain it, because the tan does fade quickly. Even though tanning can lead to skin cancer and premature aging, the harsh effects of it are not as severe as research once suggested.

Reply:the people at the salon should know how long to let you go. but i wouldn't go over 5 or 6 minutes. I go every now and then, and I'm not pale, but i only go for about that time. you still get some color, and your not in there for 20 minutes frying your skin. Being pale isn't a bad thing. At least when your 40 you won't look about 10 or 20 years older cause your skin is all leathery like.
